Modern and durable cleaning

Soap has had its day

Soap has been used for 5000 years and stretches back to the city of Babylon from about 2800 BC. That’s where and when a clay cylinder was discovered containing a soapy substance. The Ancient Egyptians frequently used soap as well, the oils of which were animal-based as well as plant-based. They used these oils to clean their skin. Roman peasant women are said to have discovered the cleaning effect of soap by accident. After washing clothes on the banks of the river Tiber, their laundry turned out to be very clean because clay from the riverbed had been mixed with animal-based grease and ash. This mixture came from the temple on Mount Sapo, a name that’s used for the word ‘soap’ in many languages.

Initially, soap was made from the ashes of burned plants until alkali was used in soap production in late 18th-century France. The latter’s a key factor in avoiding an unwanted decrease of pH levels in water, as it helps to keep this level up. A pH that’s too low makes the water acidic and aggressive to the skin and to materials. This invention allowed the production of soap on a large scale, which changed its status from a luxury to a practical skin cleanser available to everyone. Soap was also used as a cleaning agent until the first half of last century, but has almost entirely been replaced by more efficient detergents since. Unfortunately, these are often hazardous to the environment and aggressive to the skin.
